Queens, NY-based four-piece WIVES -- Jay Satterwhite (guitar/vocals), Adam Sachs (drums), Andrew Bailey (guitar), and Alex Crawford (bass) -- have signed to City Slang Records, which will release their debut 7”, 'Waving Past Nirvana' b/w 'Kinda Like You,’ on May 24th, 2019. The latest in a long lineage of New York's storied melodic punk scene, the band today released the Milah Libin-directed video for “Waving Past Nirvana;” watch it now HERE. The noisy dissonance of Sonic Youth, the edgy hooks of early Pixies, and the clever, cerebral sneering of the Fall simmer as touchstones of the band’s sound: grungy dark-wave that’s tethered to daily anxiety without resorting to cynicism. The 7” is now available for pre-order here: https://WIVES.lnk.to/WavingPas....
Embedded in New York’s DIY music scene through their respective projects, with years of playing house shows and booking their own tours under their belts, it wasn’t until a random day of extra studio time booked for another project that the four members of WIVES actually played together. “Waving Past Nirvana” pulls from the swaying beat of ‘80s rap, while the chorus jumps forward a decade into a grunge-tinged, anthemic roar. Satterwhite recounts bringing the idea to the studio and the rest of the band elevating the bones of the track: “It’s a function of me trying to be a mixture between Kool Keith and Lou Reed and failing, and the band being much sharper than me, and me then living up to the band’s track as they performed it.”
Director Libin, who has previously helmed videos for Beach Fossils and Princess Nokia, explains the visuals: "When I listened to 'Waving Past Nirvana' it evoked the beauty and the mundane in a never-ending routine. The closeness to finding some sort of fulfillment, or ‘nirvana,’ that keeps bringing one back. It happens to all types of people, but particularly in New York, where the beat is so fast and so many come here searching. It's not quite sad; there's something admirable in that search – a sort of dedication.”
